This is what I do as well mostly though I have a friend who has come up with another great way to use ratings. Him and his girlfriend share the same iTunes account and they use ratings to represent who likes a song. So like a 3 star rating means it is one of her songs and a 4 star rating means it is one of his and lastly a 5 star rating means they both like it. There are other ways to do this that would leave the rating free for their original use but I have to admit this is a quick and easy way to do that.
