A Delicious 2009?

December 20, 2008

Over the last two weeks, I have been pretty excited to see a flurry of activity from the folks at Delicious after what has been a rather quiet second half of the year. Does this indicate that we may be in for more active and frequent updates to the core Delicious functionality over the next year? I hope so.

“Practice. Practice. Practice.”

As a kid, how many times did my Dad say that to me while I was in the process of trying to learn how to do something? Is there any simpler, yet more common sense advice that you can pass along to someone who is looking to succeed in a given area? I don’t think so. Yet the concept of “practicing” is something that most of us have probably not put much thought into since we played a musical instrument or wrapped up our high school or college sports career.

Over the past year I tried a number of different web photo galleries before settling into Flickr as my web gallery of choice. During this process I installed iPhoto plug-ins when available to make it easier to export photos out of iPhoto. Until this weekend, I never took the time to clean up the plug-ins that I was no longer using. iPhoto plug-ins do not have “uninstall” buttons, so you need to go through a different process to remove them from the application. Here is what you need to do.

Not to beat a dead horse on the whole virtualization and Outlook on a Mac topic, but I was pleasantly surprised to stumble across an article on Businessweek.com from yesterday that talks about the same issues I wrote about in my switch to using Outlook on the Mac.

Now that I am using VMWare Fusion on a regular basis, I am learning the application a lot better, and this includes how to deal with typical issues that arise with day-to-day usage. Yesterday, I powered up my laptop after it had unexpectedly lost power and saw that my virtual machine was “locked”. In this state my Windows VM would not start, but I was able to figure out how to resolve the error.

I have been using Microsoft Entourage 2008 as the email client on my Mac for almost a year now and while it is not perfect, it provides the best Microsoft Exchange support out-of-the-box of any native Mac email application. That said, about two weeks ago I had to abandon ship on Entourage. I suffered a major Entourage meltdown, and it frustrated me enough that I made a hard switch over to nothing other than Microsoft Outlook.
